A bedroom community for UW, Hawthorne Hills is full of winding streets named after university towns coming together at the top of the hill at University Circle Park with great views of both Lake Washington and downtown Seattle and the Space Needle. Officially part of Windermere according to the City Clerk’s Neighborhood Map Atlas, the traditional boundaries are from 40th Ave NE in the west, NE 65th on the north, and Sandpoint Way NE on the south and east. The Bryant Neighborhood Playground on the corner of NE 65th & 40th NE is shared with the Bryant neighborhood just to the east, and the Burke-Gilman Playground Park is in the southwest corner of the neighborhood just across Sand Point Way from Seattle Children’s Hospital. Most of Hawthorne Hills is currently served by View Ridge Elementary with the western portion part of the Bryant Elementary draw. However beginning in the fall of 2010, Sand Point Elementary across Sand Point Way will serve K-5 students. Eckstein Middle School and Roosevelt High School serve the neighborhoods 6-8 and 9-12 students.
The Burke Gilman trail (paralleling Sandpoint Way) transects the south east boundary. The 30 & 74 connect Sand Point and the U District, going across the Princeton Street Bridge through the southern portion of Hawthorne Hills on NE 55th, while the 75 continues along Sandpoint Way making a big crescent between UW and Northgate. The 71 connects to the UW along NE 65th, while the 76 provides express service downtown along NE 65th. The 995 provides special service from Laurelhurst and Windermere to exclusive private schools in north Seattle such as University Prep, Lakeside and Evergreen.
